Troy Shockley has been in and around journalism for most of his adult life.
The News Director and host of Coffee Break on KCAP, Troy is back in radio after a long stint in newspaper.
Troy’s first job as a teen was, in fact, in radio. He worked on-air on weekday evenings and during weekends at KURL in Billings for three years, starting in the spring of his sophomore year. He headed to Texas to obtain a degree in broadcast journalism from Abilene Christian University, but along the way fell into newspaper.
He rose from a part-time call taker to Assistant Sports Editor, also writing occasional news and features for the lifestyle section.
He simultaneously worked at Abilene’s NPR station, KACU, working news block shifts, music shifts, and on productions and creation of an award-winning local news and sports show.
Since, he’s worked as Sports Editor in Oregon, the Sports News Editor at his hometown paper in Billings, and Sports Editor at the Helena Independent Record. He also joined Sports 94.9’s Jason Walker to start The Rundown, a one-hour local sports talk show now two years old, entering a third season this fall after being named one of the best sports shows in the state by the Montana Broadcasters Association.
Troy joined TMRC full-time in the fall of 2017, and is enjoying a return to his radio roots immensely. He is Kurt Kittleson’s co-host for Montana’s Morning News, hosts a popular daily interview show, Coffee Break, and also works with anchor Tim Boulware to find, write, and produce news in the Helena community for air and online.
